“Newborn Sessions should be booked while you are still pregnant and sessions take place within the first 2 weeks of your baby's life”
So you have just had your beautiful baby and are still buzzing from the excitement! Although you're feeling sleep deprived and exhausted, and may also have a bit of baby-brain, you wouldn't have it any other way! You've been home from hospital for maybe a week, you've had lots of visitors coming and going to meet your gorgeous bub, and finally you get some time to yourself while baby is sleeping. You suddenly think about how you would love to get some professional photos done, as you remember seeing all those beautiful photos on Facebook of your friend's babies over the years and you would love some too. You can already see your baby changing every day and you know that you should have photographs taken pretty soon to capture their tiny little features while they are still small.
You jump on the internet, and with super-excitement you start googling newborn photographers within your area. But after looking at a few websites you realise that they all say the same thing... "Newborn Sessions should be booked while you are still pregnant and sessions take place within the first 2 weeks of your baby's life". And your heart sinks... because your baby is already 10 days old... and there is no way you will ever find a photographer that is available within the next few days.
I am here to tell you that it's ok! Don't panic! And don't let those crazy woman hormones make you cry! Yes, it might take some phoning around to find a photographer who is available in the next week or 2. And yes, there are newborn photographers out there who won't photograph a baby after the 'ideal' first 2 weeks. But there are plenty of photographers who are more than happy to and I am one of them :) I believe that every mother and father should have the opportunity to have beautiful photographs captured of their much-loved baby no matter what age... You just have to be realistic about it.
Firstly, every baby is different. I have photographed newborns that are 6 days old and they act more lively than a 3 week old! So you really don't know until you try! Also, if your baby was born premature then the 2 week rule is more like a 3 or 4 week rule (depending on how early they arrived).
Secondly, many beautiful natural poses can still be achieved with an older baby. I prefer to keep my posing quite natural all of the time, but there are definitely a couple of poses that are harder to achieve with an older baby because they are less flexible and just simply bigger. In this blog I have added photographs that are realistically achievable with an older baby.
Lastly, why would you not want a beautiful photograph of your baby with their eyes open?! Every newborn photography session that I do, if the baby is a little awake I see it as lucky! I love taking photographs of newborns with their eyes open and every time I show the parents their photo gallery, they dote on these photos! They always end up in their top pick.
